Founded in 1958, Chinese (Taiwan) Society of International
Law (hereinafter referred to as the CSIL) is a non-profit
organization incorporated under the law of Taiwan, Republic of
China. The objects of the CSIL include the study, advancement
and promotion of international law, public and private, the
study of international trade law, international organization,
other legal research related to transnational affairs, and the
furthering of development and understanding over cross-strait
relationship. Pursuant to the Constitution of CSIL, those
persons, whether academics or practitioners, with specialty in
the above-referred fields, will be eligible to apply for the
CSIL’s membership.
The
utmost power of the CSIL is vested in the Members’ Conference.
At said Conference, among members fifteen (15) directors shall
be elected, who will in turn compose of Directors’ Council. Five
(5) Supervisors elected among members will constitute
Supervisors’ Council. The Directors’ Council shall have five (5)
Executive Directors whom are elected by and among Directors,
while there is only one (1) Executive Supervisor elected among
Supervisors. Directors shall elect a President among the
Executive Directors. As and for assisting the President over
day-to-day matters, the following officers shall from time to
time be decided by the President: a Secretary General, such
number (not exceeding three (3)) of Deputy Secretary General and
several Executive Secretaries as reasonably required. The names
of the CSIL’s Ex-Presidents in chronological order are: Messrs.
Tien-fong Cheng, Kwang-hsun Tu, Yi-ting Chang, Yu-chi Hsueh,
Hungdah Chiu, Ying-jeou Ma, and Dr. C. V. Chen.
Besides the sponsorship of seminars and conferences
periodically, the CSIL takes the responsibilities of holding
Jessup International Moot Court Competition (Taiwan Rounds) each
year as well as co-sponsoring with Lee & Li Culture & Education
Foundation for National Lee & Li Cup Moot Court Competition in
Taiwan. Among others, the CSIL publishes the Chinese (Taiwan)
Yearbook of International Law and Affairs, presently issued up
to 22nd volume, edits international law treatises and
newspapers, and also establishes the CSIL website for the
purposes of promoting international law-related knowledge and
information and so forth. In addition, the CSIL also publishes
Chinese (Taiwan) Review of International and Transnational Law,
a Chinese biannual periodical on multi-disciplinary topics with
a focus on international and transnational law issues regarding
the Republic of China.
Further, the CSIL is simultaneously Chinese (Taiwan) Branch
of International Law Association headquartered in London, U.K.
(hereinafter referred to as the ILA). In recent years, not only
has the CSIL actively participated in all kinds of the ILA’s
activities, but has taken the initiative in holding
international conferences, such as the ILA’s First Asian-Pacific
Regional Conference and the ILA’s 68th (Taipei) Biennial
Conference in 1995 and 1998, respectively, both remarkable
success. Accordingly, the CSIL’s efforts have greatly
contributed to the elevation of international status and foreign
diplomacy of the Republic of China.
